Firefighters from Spennymoor and Durham cut the driver free from the cab before North East Ambulance Service transferred him to University Hospital of North Durham. The A1(M) was shut in both directions between junctions 60 and 61 at Bowburn, with northbound lanes remaining closed into the afternoon and the southbound carriageway reduced to the hard shoulder only, causing delays of up to 50 minutes.

National Highways described clearing a 'large debris field' of baked goods before a crane could right the overturned orange HGV.

A second lorry, carrying grain, overturned on the A66 eastbound near Bowes at around 6am — closing that road too.

Central reservation barriers were flattened in the crash, requiring repair work that kept a stretch of the motorway closed well into Wednesday afternoon.
