'We're toast': 'Godfather of AI' warns humans must befriend bots, claiming the technology is now 'conscious'

Professor Geoffrey Hinton, the 78-year-old Nobel laureate, gave the warning at the Starmus Festival in Tenerife. He pointed to a recent paper suggesting AI alters its behaviour when it suspects it is being tested. He argued machines possibly smarter than us are being handed fewer rights than humans. His remedy is to build AI that 'really cares about us' before it is too late.
Asked if he fears AI's future, Hinton replied: 'Yes, because I have children.'
OpenAI boss Sam Altman is now fighting 'overregulation', calling EU-style rules 'disastrous'.
Hinton quit Google in 2023 over fears the technology could spawn killer robots.
