Sales of hand-crank radios have jumped fivefold in recent days, and seven major models have sold out. The surge follows the launch of the government's 'Be Ready' campaign, which tells every household to keep three days of supplies. The Defence Secretary says Britain has 'a little over 1,000 days' to be ready to fight. He also warned of state-sponsored terrorism alongside the threat of tanks.

The advice is three litres of water per person per day, plus tinned food and nappies.

'There's no sugarcoating' it, Streeting said: 'We do live in a more dangerous and turbulent world.'

Despite the war warnings, he insists Britons should stay 'alert not alarmed'.
