Westlife's Mark Feehily sues surgeon after weight-loss op allegedly left him needing his entire stomach removed

Mark Feehily, 46, has filed a High Court medical negligence claim against bariatric surgeon Nick Carter, alleging a botched 2020 weight-loss procedure at Spire Portsmouth Hospital triggered years of recurring sepsis and catastrophic health decline. Feehily's legal team at Leigh Day Solicitors claim Carter failed to remove enough stomach tissue during the laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy, causing a dangerous leak and severe abdominal infections. The cascade of complications meant Feehily required a full gastrectomy in May 2023. Carter denies negligence.

The claim, lodged at the High Court in 2025, seeks more than £200,000, though a larger sum could be awarded if Feehily wins at trial.

Liability and damages are to be heard separately, with the initial split trial scheduled between May 28 and July 31; compensation will be assessed only if negligence is established.

Leigh Day partner Suzanne White described the period as 'extremely challenging' for Feehily, saying he had faced it 'with characteristic strength and resilience' and will not comment while proceedings are ongoing.
