Cyclists continue to ride along the newly pedestrianised section of Oxford Street, flouting a ban that bars bikes between 7am and midnight, with rush-hour queues building on neighbouring roads.Sadiq Khan unveils the pedestrianised stretch of Oxford Street, which he says will drive out the 'dross' American-style candy shops that have long blighted the road.
Black cab drivers fear disabled passengers will struggle to reach shops now that cabs are barred from the nearly kilometre-long stretch between Orchard Street and Great Portland Street. Lord Sadiq Khan called Monday's launch 'momentous' and vowed to reverse the street's 'managed decline'. The final red bus ran along the route on Sunday night. Deliveries are allowed only between midnight and 7am.
Khan says seating, public squares and new trees will follow in the New Year.
Campaigners for Londoners with sight loss backed the scheme despite the council's concerns.
One critic dismissed Khan's promised pedestrian 'paradise' as a far cry from reality.
