A yellow weather warning from the Met Office covered 28 areas across central and southern England on Friday as visibility fell below 100 metres through the morning rush hour. Fog was forecast to spread more widely from Friday evening and linger through the Halloween weekend, with eastern England most affected.

The warning zone ran from Lincolnshire through the East Midlands, the Home Counties and parts of Greater London, taking in areas near Heathrow and Stansted.

Meteorologist Honor Criswick said fog would be 'more widespread' into Friday evening, with Saturday beginning 'chilly and gloomy' before sunny spells break through.

The AA advised drivers not to rely on automatic headlights in fog, to reduce speed and leave greater gaps between vehicles, cautioning that road workers are 'much harder to see' in poor visibility.
