William Hill owner blames Labour's tax raid for 270 shop closures and urges Healey to halt further gambling hikes
Evoke chief executive Per Widerström said revenue fell 7% to £406m in the third quarter. He warned that the shop closures prove the 'real impact on jobs and livelihoods' of higher taxes. Chancellor John Healey is weighing a rise in Machine Games Duty, the levy on slot machines, in next Wednesday's Budget. The Social Market Foundation wants that duty doubled from 20 to 40 per cent to raise £458m a year.
Flutter, which owns Paddy Power, is axing 1,400 UK and Irish jobs and blames the duty rises.
The Betting and Gaming Council puts jobs lost or at risk since last year's Budget at around 12,400.
On a leaked draft of the think tank's own report, its director Theo Bertram asked: 'Is this overly optimistic?'
