Walter Koenig, who played navigator Pavel Chekov across the original 'Star Trek' series and six feature films, died of old age at his North Hollywood home on Sunday, aged 90, surrounded by his daughter and niece. William Shatner, 95, wrote on Instagram that Koenig "preferred to be among the people" rather than sit behind a signing table at conventions.

George Takei, 89, revealed Koenig served as best man at his 2008 wedding, calling him "a writer, a teacher, a thoughtful man, and a loyal friend."

Takei and Shatner are now the last surviving members of the main original 'Star Trek' cast.

Kim Cattrall, who starred alongside Koenig in 'Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country', wrote: "Rest well dear Walter — it was a pleasure sharing the bridge with you."
