Walter Koenig, who played Russian navigator Ensign Pavel Chekov across the original 'Star Trek' series and six subsequent films, died of natural causes at his home in North Hollywood on Sunday aged 90. William Shatner, 95, wrote on Instagram that although the two were not close off set, Koenig's warmth with fans at conventions — where he refused to stay behind signing tables — was something "rare" that would never be forgotten.

George Takei, who played Hikaru Sulu, said his heart was "heavy" after nearly six decades of friendship since they first met on the Enterprise bridge.

Takei revealed Koenig had served as best man at his 2008 wedding, and that Koenig's 90th birthday on 14 September fell on the same day as his own wedding anniversary.

Kim Cattrall, who appeared alongside Koenig in 'Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country', also paid tribute on Instagram.
