William jokingly tapped his watch and told Catherine she needed to "speed up" during their Isle of Bute walkabout on Thursday, prompting laughter and cheers from the crowd. It was the couple's first official trip to the Scottish island, which was selected in recognition of its community spirit and volunteering ethos. One well-wisher bellowed from the back of the crowd: "You two are f***ing brilliant."

Catherine had been chatting and posing for selfies with dozens of residents before William intervened, pointing down the line of well-wishers still waiting to meet her.

Earlier at Bute Shinty Club, Catherine declared "I want to give it a go" — swung and missed her first shot, then fired several at the goalkeeper, nearly hitting members of the press pack.

The warm visit came amid a bitter row between King Charles and Earl Spencer, whose forthcoming Diana memoir claims Charles said "rest assured, we'll forget her soon enough" days after her death.
