Wind-driven brush fires force mass evacuations and widespread power shutoffs across Southern California

Television footage showed several homes engulfed in flames in San Juan Capistrano, Orange County, as a fast-moving wildfire that originated in San Clemente swept through the area on Friday. Around 12,000 people face evacuation orders in the Malibu area alone, where the Bryson Fire has scorched over 140 acres and remains just 17% contained. Over 400 firefighters are deployed across multiple blazes as wind gusts reaching 70mph are forecast to push the fires further into residential neighbourhoods through Friday afternoon.

LA County Fire Chief Anthony Marrone cautioned that should winds strengthen and containment lines fail, 'a larger area could be affected and under threat.'

Tens of thousands of Californians woke without power after utility companies imposed preemptive shutoffs across the state.

One firefighter was injured and hospitalised, though officials say doctors expect them to recover fully.
