World-first personalised cancer jab built from a patient's own tumour cuts the risk of melanoma death or return by 42%
About 82% of patients given the jab alongside immunotherapy drug Keytruda were alive and melanoma-free two years on, against 70% on Keytruda alone. The phase three trial of Moderna and MSD's vaccine, intismeran, tracked 1,137 high-risk patients whose tumours had been surgically removed. Each jab is custom-built within weeks using DNA sequencing and artificial intelligence. It is now being tested against lung, kidney and bladder cancer.
Trial leader Prof Georgina Long called the results 'a foundational shift in our approach to cancer'.
The jab uses the same mRNA technology behind Covid vaccines.
Independent experts say longer-term studies are still needed to prove patients live longer.
