Halloween night in Birmingham city centre descended into chaos as gangs of youths fired rockets along New Street and Corporation Street, sending shoppers and revellers fleeing in terror. West Midlands Police imposed a Section 60 stop-and-search order lasting into the early hours and detained a number of suspects on suspicion of assault, fireworks offences and possession of an offensive weapon.

All seven people arrested, aged between 15 and 26, remained in custody, the youngest being 15.

During the disorder, large pyrotechnics were aimed directly at police riot vans, knocking officers off their feet.

'Fireworks were exploding next to people in the street — I would be amazed if nobody was injured,' one witness said.
