Gillian Anderson was filmed at the stage door of Soho Place telling a group of superfans they were forbidden from buying front-row tickets to her sold-out West End production of 'Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?', calling their repeated presence "so distracting." After the video went viral on TikTok and sparked a backlash, Anderson posted a statement on X insisting the fans were women she has known for over 20 years and urging followers not to say anything negative about them. She plays Martha opposite Billy Crudup's George in the Edward Albee revival, directed by Marianne Elliott, which runs at the intimate 600-seat Soho Place until 19 December.
The theatre stages the play in the round, meaning performers are just metres from front-row audience members throughout the show.
Anderson's clarification struck a conciliatory tone: 'In such an intimate venue we can all see you — sometimes it can be a tad distracting. That's all. All good.'
The row follows Cate Blanchett making headlines last month for asking audiences at her own West End show to put their phones away during curtain call.
