Yvette Cooper orders an urgent plan to end 'corridor care' for children as 12-hour A&E waits top 50,000

Health Secretary Yvette Cooper apologised on behalf of the NHS to the family of Finlay Roberts, a two-year-old whose final hours were spent in a busy A&E corridor before his death in 2024. His father David said the boy 'just clung to me, as we now know, slowly dying'. Cooper has instructed NHS England to draw up new A&E standards tailored specifically to children. Data on corridor care involving children will now be collected as its own separate category.

In September, England's hospitals were delivering corridor care to an average of 3,310 patients each day.

Finlay's mother Liz was directed to administer a suppository to him while they were in the corridor.

Cooper says child health has been treated 'as a bit of a sidecar' by the NHS.
