Anton Kovalskyi, 42, who heads the Khmelnytskyi Regional Prosecutor's Office, was installed by presidential decree on Thursday to lead Ukraine's prosecution service amid an ongoing war with Russia. The scandal centres on an alleged criminal network inside the prosecutor general's office that took bribes from fraudulent call centres and laundered millions in assets, buying property and jewellery. Outgoing chief Ruslan Kravchenko resigned on September 7 after anti-corruption investigators raided his offices and denied all wrongdoing.
Kravchenko struck back at investigators, alleging that anti-corruption bureau chief Semen Kryvonos had fabricated documents — charges Kryvonos rejected as 'nonsense'.
Ukraine's anti-corruption agencies warned of an 'unprecedented' campaign to disrupt their probes, with detectives and their vehicles placed under surveillance.
